New Kittsee Castle
Magnificent history
Kittsee Castle is located on the edge of the town center. Surrounded by a park, this Baroque palace is one of the most important sights in northern Burgenland.
It was built in the early 17th century as a manor farm, before being enlarged and expanded into a castle complex under Johann Listy, who came from Transylvania. Another major renovation took place in the mid-18th century, when Prince Paul Anton Esterházy had it remodeled in the Baroque style.
At the end of the 19th century, Prince Ladislaus Batthyány-Strattmann moved into the castle with his family and became known in history as the “Doctor of the Poor.” Batthyány-Strattmann founded Kittsee Hospital and treated patients there free of charge. In 1969, the castle became the property of the municipality of Kittsee, and a comprehensive restoration was carried out in the years that followed.
